Late summer and early autumn are exciting times to be in Towson. As students come back for the fall semester, the town comes alive with events and opportunities to have fun.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up this August and September:

At the Schools

With Towson University and Goucher College just around the corner, living in downtown Towson means access to a wide variety of sports, education, and cultural events.

On Sept. 6-7, Goucher will host a two-day event focused on sustainability. Over the course of the two days, the college will feature presentations and collaborative conversations on campus, as well as a partially virtual event looping in experts from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and the Universidade Federal de Sergipe in Brazil.

During October, the Goucher campus opens up for several walks and runs, including the Charm City Run Kids XC Series on Oct. 9 and the NEDA Walk, benefiting the National Eating Disorders Association.

Towson University’s football season kicks off at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 with a home game against Baltimore’s own Morgan State. Before the game, the area around Johnny Unitas Stadium will be teeming with tailgaters and the general atmosphere should be a festival all over town, all day long.

The season continues with games against West Virginia University on Sept. 17 and New Hampshire on Sept. 24. Other sports are also in full swing, including volleyball, which has its home opener against Princeton in SECU Arena on Sept. 2.

On the cultural front, on Sept. 8, Towson will host a lecture from Sagi Refael, an art historian, curator, and writer originally from Israel and now based in Los Angeles, and on Sept. 22, the school will welcome sculptor Sara Parent-Ramos for a talk.

Feet on the Street

Towson’s Friday night block parties, Feet on the Street, will continue through August 26 and will return for one extra-special “Uptown Roar” party on Sept. 23. The party, which takes place on Allegheny Ave., includes food and drinks from local restaurants, lots of kid-friendly activities, and live music from local bands.

In August, bands include Capital Chili, The Jury, and Chesapeake Sons. On Sept. 23, the party will make its way to Pennsylvania Ave., where Day Drinkin Band will entertain the crowd.

What’s Happening at The Recher

This month, Towson’s premier music venue offers shows for a wide range of music fans, from emo kids to jam band aficionados.

Friday, Sept. 9, The Recher hosts host rock acts Kings of the Wild Things, Crosswinds, Pat Renny, Reverent Lowdown, and Distance to Dawn.

On Sept. 16 brings Jazz is Phsh – the Instrumental Tribute to Phish. The performance will “celebrate the music of Phish through the lens of jazz” – an interesting take on the popular jam band.

And on Saturday, Sept. 17, the venue goes emo, with Emo Night Baltimore, featuring Tickle Me Emo sharing tunes from bands like My Chemical Romance, Paramore, The Killers, and All Time Low.

Restaurant & Bar Scene

Downtown Towson hotspots are full of fun events this season.

The Greene Turtle will be reopening in Towson, in the space formerly occupied in Lotsa Stone Pizza. The Turtle was previously in the current Barley’s Backyard Uptown space; that location closed and Barley’s opened in August 2020.

Head to The Point in Towson for karaoke every Thursday night and keep an eye out for special events, including live music and trivia nights – including a Jersey Shore trivia party on Sept. 17.

C&R Pub has several live music performances lined up, including Homestead Band on Aug. 19 and Southbound Band on Sept. 3.

Perennial continues to keep its menu fresh and seasonal, introducing new dishes on a regular basis. Plus, the bar has live music during happy hour every evening – weekdays and weekends.

Bandito’s, in the old Café Troia space, is up and running, serving their terrific tacos and great drinks to hungry Towsonites.

Sky King will perform live at Nacho Mama’s on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

CVP’s monthly drag brunch is scheduled for Aug. 21 and features Sabrina Sommers, Tania, Ivana, and Phoenix.

Towson Tavern offers a Restaurant Week-style promotion every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The deal includes three courses for $35; it’s a good one!

Towson Farmers’ Market

The Towson Farmers’ Market is still going strong, every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The market, located on Allegheny Ave., features a variety of prepared food, farmed produce and meats, and crafts/art – a little something for everyone.
